CSR—Business Responsibility, Sustainability and SROI
Indian growth story is marked with paradox of accelerated economic progress on one hand and extreme social and economic inequality on the other. Training and capacity building of CSR team is an investment of a long-term to make the work force effective and efficient in achieving organizational goals. Training is essential because CSR itself is at nascent & developing stage, simultaneously the socio-economic and cultural scenario of India is completely different from western world. Organizations or Company’s vision, responsibility & social needs also vary from place to practice.
CSR today is not only relevant but it is the statutory requirement for your business as per the Indian Companies Act 2013 [2% of net profit to be spent on CSR Activities by the companies covered under sec. 135 of The Companies Act 2013], as providing opportunity to work for the inclusive growth of the society and nation building in process. Challenges Social risks for businesses, growing voluntary activism, stakeholders expectations, regulatory compliances, transformation of CSR concept from charity to sustainability, Investment of 2% hard earned profit in order to leverage the societal inclusive growth by their responsible initiatives to achieve business sustainability and lastly the most important is training & skill up gradation of CSR professional to deliver impactful & compatible result to give return of investment in the form of inclusive growth.
Program objective is to support corporate to increase their core competencies, managerial efficiencies for effective & efficient investment in sector for better social return on investment (SROI). This needs well trained & skilled CSR workforce which can understand corporate social needs, methodology of need identification, strategic planning, creation of frame work, meeting regulatory & bench marking expectations, Reporting & communication planning and management, lastly how to align CSR with business process.
NGO—Social Entrepreneurship and Social Business
The program benefits NGOs and Social Enterprises to understand the need of hour, approach and ambit of Sec-135 & Schedule-VII of The Companies Act, 2013 & accordingly orientation of their knowledge and skills towards social business and inclusive growth. The recent changes in law and social business practices have brought an opportunity for NGOs and social development organizations to act jointly with corporate in order to achieve the Corporate and National objectives. NGO and civil societies have crucial role to play in government's corporate social responsibility agenda. In a civil society NGOs and social development organizations can reach easily to the 'bottom of the pyramid', which is the primary approach through CSR.
Having a readiness to engage and overcome the difficulties in different work cultures is Important, along with a clear understanding of the competencies and value, as collaboration brings new learning process and higher achievement of SROI. Mentoring, training and regular interactive workshop programs are one way of building a deeper sense of connection and shared purpose. Today social organizations need to shift from their grant-based approach to market-based approach that are service and product oriented to contribute sustainable development for the long term. Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have played a major role in pushing sustainable development at the international level. Campaigning groups have been key drivers of inter-governmental negotiations, ranging from the regulation of hazardous wastes to global impact on climatic change, channelizing and motivating corporate contribution to elimination social evils affecting society and world at large.
Social organizations with well defined strategic vision, mission, and goals are those to achieve collaborative support of the Corporate & other stakeholders. They must have a sound organizational structure, human resources and flexibility to adapt corporate culture perceiving their voluntary character and providing transparency & commitment in their management.
Understanding - Collaborative Approach and Inclusive Growth
It is essential for successful partnership to establish good communication through transparency and also act as a critique who understands each other and make balance to work together. Corporate expects the NGOs to understand their values; their vision, business value chain, social value and culture - and integrate them into the partnership. Hence a particular NGO needs to prove themselves, a right choice among large numbers of NGO’s in the country. The importance of partnership & collaboration has been made clear in the legislation itself; the act say’s companies undertake its CSR activities approved by the CSR Committee, through a registered trust or a registered society or a trust established by the company or its holding or subsidiary or associate company under section 8 of the Act or otherwise.
It is a new prospect for Social organizations, Trust, Society, NGO’s & other Nonprofit agencies to utilize their knowledge, expertise and capabilities to accomplish more than they could do alone. Companies who can collaborate and invest CSR corpus are ready to be approached for inclusive sustainable development but the lack of information and expertise to invest, need to be understood and learned, here comes the role of Social organizations in order to provide them better knowledge and expertise. To associate with corporate, Social organizations should increase the visibility of their work and build trust & credibility
Establishment of partnership is a challenge because of the deep seated perceptions from both sides; for Corporate, NGO’s are characterized as activists, on the other hand for NGO’s; business entities are for profit making at the cost of people & planet. These misunderstandings and other obstacles can prevent partnerships from reaching their potential. Both NGOs and Corporate should make concrete steps towards well designed & structured framework to realize other’s requirements, objectives in order to achieve common goal and aligning CSR in business process with sustainable growth.
